Study Skills

Midterms are almost upon you. We've talked a lot about how technology can negatively impact the way we concentrate and we all have different ways of learning. Some of us have to stand, walk around, recite out loud, make jokes or songs out of the material to help us remember it. Take a look at this site created by Virginia Tech University: http://www.ucc.vt.edu/academic_support_students/study_skills_information/study_skills_checklist/index.html

Share one weakness you have that you identify with from the link above, one solution the website recommends and one trick you have that you use to help you succeed.

  1. One weakness that I identify with is studying in a disorganized way. This website suggests that I thoroughly understand what I need to memorize for a test. One trick that I have that helps me succeed is going over the material multiple times so that I can remember it.

  2. One weakness I have identified is I sometimes doodle, daydream, or fall asleep during class. The website says one way to help be more prepared is to study in a distraction free environment. One trick I use to study is to recite the information out loud as I walk around.

    1. Good Margaret. According to a study in 2010 "words spoken aloud were remembered much better than those that were read silently."

  3. A weakness I have identified is that I am unable to study in a quiet environment. This website suggests that as opposed to sitting on the couch with the tv on, I could study at a desk in a well-lit room. A trick I use to help me study is to teach the material to someone else; saying it out loud helps me retain information, analyzing it helps me to understand it, and it also helps a friend study since they are learning it in a perhaps more entertaining environment.

  4. One weakness that I have when it comes to note taking or even studying, is putting on the tv or radio while trying to memorize my work. To find a solution to my problem Virginia Tech University suggested that I should stay in a less distracting area of my house. For example, my dining room table were there is no noise and good lighting. A trick that I use to help me study is every 15 minutes I do a different subject and it helps me remember quicker. Then I put my younger siblings to work and ask them to question me on what I just learned. While testing me, if I am not paying attention, they shut off the tv and leave it that way.

  5. One weakness that I have when I'm studying is cramming hours the night before the test. Sometimes I get caught up in other social activities, such as dance or cheerleading practice and I don't have a lot of time to study. This website suggests to create a study schedule and study a little bit everyday instead of cramming the night before. A trick I use when studying is going over my notes many times and then reciting the information out loud to make sure I know it.

  6. When studying, I cannot sit for long periods of time without being distracted. The article suggests to set goals for myself when studying to help me stay on track. A trick I use to help me succeed is to use a reward system, after every topic I study for, I allow myself a five minute break.

  7. When studying, one of my weaknesses is cramming in all of the studying the night before the exam. I tend to procrastinate a lot of the time until I finally realize that the test is the next day. O NO!!! I tend to blame the outside activities I do most of the time. The Virginia Tech article suggested to study little by little over a period of time so it is easier to retain and the cramming shrinks. I will defientely take this to mind for both myself and the sake of my grades.

  8. When studying, one weakness I have is not planning my time. I tend to look over my notes a few days before the test, but then I don't look at them until the day before. Then, I'll forget the material. This article suggests that I should look at my notes throughout the day and try to test myself.

  9. I tend to get distracted easily when studying so I don't always study as hard and i should. I also don't manage my time well enough as I have other things to do outside of school. The article suggests that i should look through my notes everyday for i=a little bit so when the day of the test comes, I'll be prepared.

  10. One weakness that I have realized is that whenever I get notified on my phone weather its a text or an email i rush myself, so that I can go look at it. This makes whatever homework or studying I'm doing very bad and nonsufficient.

    1. Yes. Digital distractions are not good. We saw in class about how bad this is for your memory. Hide it away from you until you are done or taking a break.

    2. One weakness that I have while studying is that I get distracted easily if it's too quiet. I also do not manage my time well, so I either study for 3 hours straight or study for 5 minutes and take a "quick" break and never get back to studying.
